Keeping the Flame Alive

The Olympic Torch

One of the most enduring images of the Olympic Games is of relay runners carrying the torch that ignites the Olympic Flame. Perforated Tubes played a pivotal role in making the torch used for the 2006 Olympic Games in Torino, Italy, a success.

What was needed

As a key symbol of the Olympic Games, the Torch must burn brightly, burn cleanly and burn safely for the runners who carry it. Above all, the flame must never go out, no matter what the weather and wind conditions.

What we provided

Our precision-milled tubes were an integral part of the Olympic Torch’s flame arrestor, a baffle through which gas and a 360°F flame were dispersed. In the end, 10,005 Olympic Torches, which burned without fail, were carried in the pre-Olympic relay.

Going with the Flow

The Baku Pipeline

The Baku Tbilisi Ceyhan (BTC) Pipeline, which runs for more than 1,000 miles from the Caspian Sea through Turkey, Georgia and Azerbaijan, will produce 1 million barrels of oil a day for the next 40 years.

What was needed

Filtration is critical to protecting equipment from sand that can cause clogging and breakdowns, and to keep oil flowing.

What we provided

Perforated Tubes leveraged its extensive experience in tubes for offshore oil wells to produce the protective shroud for filtering devices in the completion systems of the payoff zone of Baku Pipeline wells. We custom-configured the tubes to have a channel-like dimple that provides superior filtration and optimizes smart-well technology performance. As one of the few companies able to meet this specialized application’s exacting specifications, we have supplied more than 2,000 shrouds for the Baku Pipeline.

Sometimes It Is Rocket Science

The Mars Rovers

Launched in 2004, the Mars Rovers, Spirit and Opportunity, have been exploring Mars and broadcasting unprecedented, firsthand information about the planet.

What was needed

Because the Rovers would have to bounce off the Mars surface several times as part of the landing process, they were encased in protective airbags that cushioned them during multiple impacts. Protecting those airbags from rocks and debris was mission critical.

What we provided

Perforated Tubes was chosen for this project because of our work with the Space Shuttle and our track record for manufacturing to the aerospace industry’s standards for tight tolerances. Our precision-milled tubes were a key component in the igniter basket/airbag units — the first line of defense that kept the Mars Rover project from ending before it could get started.
